Activity of Anak Krakatau, Semeru, Poás - Continuation of the seismic swarm on São Jorge

Two eruptive episodes marked the morning of Anak Krakatau on March 24, 2022.

The first at 09:12 WIB was accompanied by a white-colored plume, observed about 500 meters above the summit, dispersing to the southeast. It was recorded on the seismogram with a max. of 40mm.

The second occurred at 11:10 a.m. WIB; the plume, white to gray, rose about 1,000 meters above the summit / 1,157 m. asl. The recording on the seismogram shows a max. 45mm.

The seismicity of March 23 was characterized by:

2 emission earthquakes, blast, with an amplitude of 20-30 mm, and the duration of the earthquake was 20-35 seconds.
1 episode of harmonic earthquake, with an amplitude of 22 mm and an earthquake of 45 seconds.
8 low frequency earthquakes, with an amplitude of 8 to 15 mm and an earthquake duration of 9 to 12 seconds.
1 episode of continuous tremor, amplitude 1 to 30 mm, mostly 7 mm.

The activity level remains at 2 / waspada, with an approach ban within a radius of 2 km. from the crater

At Semeru, on the island of Java, the seismicity from March 15 to 22, 2022 is characterized by:

- 429 earthquakes of eruptions
- 4 earthquakes of pyroclastic avalanche flows
- 7 avalanche earthquakes
- 14 harmonic episodes
- shallow volcanic earthquakes
- 1 local tectonic earthquake and 24 distant tectonic earthquakes

That of March 23, 2022 describes:

- 68 eruption earthquakes
- 1 earthquake of pyroclastic flows of avalanches with an amplitude of 25 mm and an earthquake duration of 420 seconds.
- 1 avalanche earthquake
- 6 emission earthquakes
- 6 harmonic episodes
- 2 deep volcanic earthquakes
- 3 distant tectonic earthquakes

The Semeru remains in activity level 3 / siaga, with a recommendation not to travel within a radius of 5 km., an area prone to pyroclast fallout, and to carry out no activity in the south-eastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 km from the summit (the center of the eruption). Beyond this distance, the community does not conduct activities within 500 meters of the bank (river edge) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows. lava up to a distance of 17 km from the summit.

Poás - fumaroles on the banks of the Caliente laguna on 03.23.2022 / 10:47 a.m. - Ovsicori webcam

After a recent visit by the organization Volcanoes sin Fronteras, experts found hot springs in the active Poás crater.

"Laguna Caliente is fed by several streams, quite warm, temperatures reaching 90°C and new fumaroles have also appeared," explained volcanologist Gino González.

The acidic Poás Lake has risen three meters in the past year and its temperature has risen from 46 to 36°C. This increase in volume is linked to the formation of various fumaroles, especially in the eastern part of the crater.

According to scientists, the last time such a phenomenon was recorded was in the late 1990s.

Experts consider it essential to study and monitor these hot springs because their eventual decrease or disappearance would mean an increase in volcanic activity. Samples will be analyzed by the INGV.

São Jorge - alert 4 - possibility of eruption - earthquakes at 23.03.2022 / Meteo Trás-os-Montes - Portugal via CIVISA

The seismic swarm that marks São Jorge in the Azores continues.

The Azores SeismoVolcanic Information and Monitoring Center (CIVISA) today raised the volcanic alert level on the island of São Jorge to 4 (out of a total of five), which means a real possibility of an eruption. .

As this is an island that has only been colonized since the 15th century, the only eruptions for which we have written sources are those of 1580 and 1808, the two most recent eruptions on São Jorge.
